Omnia-6fm has won the praise of German Telekom for its implementation of the International Telecommunications Union’s BS-412 specification, which sets strict limits on broadcast power.
According to Peter Passian of P + P Nachrichtentechnik (Germany’s representative for Omnia and Telos Systems products), German Telekom’s Media Broadcast/OOP department in Berlin tested three audio processors for BS-412 compliance: the Omnia-6fm, the Orban Optimod-FM 8400 and the IDT DVP FFT audio processor. A carrier deviation of 75 kHz and maximum MPX power of 0dBr (ITU BS-412) for FM broadcasters is strictly enforced by Germany’s Regulation Authority Reg.d.P.; German Telekom’s specific testing goal was to examine how well the tested processors obeyed this mandate.
“German Telekom considers it essential that users have the ability, once the BS- 412 settings are made, to adjust and change processor presets without affecting MPX power and peak deviation settings. Omnia-6fm easily met this criteria; other brands did not,” says Passian.
“The way Omnia-6fm keeps the maximum allowed MPX power and controls peak deviation is brilliant,” said Dipl. Ing. Dieter Krobs of German Telekom.
“Omnia-6fm meets the BS-412 specifications because our team designed it using an innovative algorithm that measures the weighted density (multiplex power) of the signal. Then it adjusts the final processing stage to ensure that the BS-412 requirement is adhered to while continuing to maintain maximum peak deviation,” says Frank Foti, President of Telos Systems/Omnia. “We realized immediately that the ability to keep power and peak deviation within limits regardless of other processing changes would be essential for European broadcasters to stay legal.”
